Short Fiction: MA Thesis film

Shaun is a quiet, space-obsessed eleven-year-old who is building a space-rocket in his back garden, assisted by little brother Joey. Shaun’s mother, Stace, is embroiled in a desperate financial struggle to keep a roof over their heads, and as her mental health deteriorates Shaun increasingly retreats into his engineering project, guided by NASA mission controllers of a bygone era.

The brothers plan their launch for a coming super-moon, but Stace finally snaps, and as the paramedics beak down the front-door Shaun discovers that some rockets never launch, and the last bulwarks of childhood naivety crumble, along with the spaceship, into a pile of broken dreams, wood and junk.
